Future Projects

​On November 6, 2018, the voters of Polk County approved an extension of the half-cent sales tax for public schools.  This tax will continue for 15 years, from January 1, 2019 through December 30, 2034.  The improvements to be funded from the sales tax include:

Safety and Security enhancements at all schools.  Improvements may include:
  • Upgraded fire alarm systems and intrusion alarms
  • Cameras and video surveillance
  • Door lock systems / card access
  • Upgraded doors / windows
  • Campus fencing and remodeling of front offices to create one point of entry
  • School check-in management systems
  • Upgraded security and data communication systems
Technology upgrades at all schools to create and maintain future-ready schools.  Improvements may include:
  • Wireless communication
  • Classroom enhancements for project-based learning
  • Upgraded classroom technology
  • Creation of flexible learning environments
  • ITV studio and software upgrades
Maintenance of all facilities to create and maintain healthy schools.  Improvements may include:
  • Projects to meet the American with Disability Act (ADA) requirements
  • Improvement to aesthetics at schools
  • Door and window upgrades
  • HVAC replacements
  • Lighting conversion and improvements
Renovations or remodeling to create healthy schools:   These projects include:
  • School renovations 
  • School remodels
  • New cafeterias
  • Providing gyms to all middle schools
  • Improved parking and traffic circulation
  • Additions and upgrades to play areas
  • Early childhood remodeling projects
  • Upgrades to maintenance facilities
  • Portables replacement and minor additions
Athletics and physical education and play areas for the overall well-being of all students.  Projects may include:
  • Lighting replacement and upgrades
  • Playground equipment
  • Replacement/new fields
  • Track resurfacing
 
Complete modernization and replacement projects at 11 schools located throughout the county and 6 new schools, 4 in the northeast area of the county and 2 in southeast Winter Haven.

The half-cent sales tax can only be used for capital projects including facilities maintenance, renovations, and construction, as well as security and technology, Sales tax revenue cannot be spent on general operating expenses such as salaries or instructional material. The sales tax extension is projected to raise $675 million dollars for Polk County schools. As with the 2003 sales tax, audits will be conducted and there will be an OVERSIGHT SALES TAX COMMITTEE to ensure the monies are being spent as promised.
